Lusatian Competencies

The economic region of Lusatia has been an important location for energy and industry for over 150 years. With a production volume of around 60 million tonnes of lignite, the Lusatian mining area is one of the largest of its kind in the world. The region is home to some of the most modern, efficient, and cleanest power plants worldwide, with capacities ranging from 1,500 to 3,000 MW.

The company structure of the mining and energy industry field of competence is wide ranging and primarily characterised by small and medium-sized enterprises. The approximately 300 companies in Berlin and Brandenburg and around 150 companies in Saxony are active along the entire value chain.

In view of the energy transition, a profound structural change is taking place in the Lusatian energy region and beyond, impacting on existing (international) supply chains. In this context, companies and scientific institutions have joined forces to form the initiative MinGenTec in order to secure accumulated knowledge, develop new business opportunities with the help of innovation funding and open up new target markets by supporting internationalisation.
